Why Nepenthes maxima is popular as a breeding species.

N. maxima is very frequently employed by hybridizers for its ease of cultivation, generous pitcher production, and large, colorful pitchers. This plant illustrates these traits, and is one of my favorite plants because it is always loaded with foot-long, beautifully marked pitchers. It is also very compact and in the fourteen months I have had it, it has yet to start vining, a useful trait. (Nepenthes that quickly progress to the vining stage tend to be problematic in a relatively small growing space, as they quickly send out yard long canes!)
