Nepenthes vogelii changes sex!

Last summer (July 2014) this plant of N. vogelii flowered male. This year, it’s female!

    • There has been speculation that some individuals are tetraploids, and if they morph back to diploid, they can go from male to female. It might be an evolutionary survival strategy – if a plant can change sex periodically, might that not improve the odds of seed production in a population with a very limited number of individuals? 1. No freakin’ way! That’s very, very interesting. That explanation makes sense, Paul. I’ll even try to remember to ask one of our professors (studies evolution of genders in plants) about this the next time I see her.
